Informal Inquiry

The Informal Inquiry process allows the Office of the Police Ombudsman to resolve less-serious complaints by delegating to SAPOL the responsibility for handling and investigating the matter and determining an appropriate outcome.

A nominated inquiry officer will first speak with the complainant before collecting and reviewing any available evidence. The inquiry officer will then make a determination as to whether there has been a breach of discipline and, if so, will recommend an appropriate disciplinary action. Following the implementation of any disciplinary action, the file will be returned to the Office of the Police Ombudsman and an assessment will be made of whether the complaint has been adequately dealt with. At this time, the complainant will be notified of the outcome and of their entitlement to request that further action be taken.
